To Nonno Mario

“A great Pinot Noir takes real work. The cultivar is demanding and difficult, the results can be wild and unpredictable – but when it all comes together, the wondrous depth and complexity are rarely equalled. And that’s why this is the perfect tribute to our beloved Nonno Mario. Confident and assured, brimming with warm strength and character. A New Zealand Pinot masterfully crafted with the depth and style that will find favour with an Italian palate just like Nonno Mario’s. He would have raised this glass with a smile. The heart and body of this wine may be pure New Zealand... but the soul is true Italia. Salute, Nonno!”

Tasting notes

Intense aromas of dark blueberries and black currents meld together with a subtle touch of vanilla, cedar and spice. The wine has good aging potential and will reward those that have the patience to cellar it for several years.

Area of production

Bankhouse Estate, Waihopai Valley. Sandy clay loam over river gravels, which provides good drainage.

Production process

The grapes are picked into an open top fermenter. The fruit is cold soaked for about 7 days to make sure the colour and the fruit characters are extracted. Then the fermentation starts spontaneously, with the grapes own native yeasts. After about 7 days of ferment, the wine undergoes a post ferment maceration for about one more week. After that, it is pressed and aged in French oak for 12 months. After that, all the barrels are put together, the wine is filtered and bottled but not fined.
